For buyers new to the category — what coconut-shell charcoal is, why it beats hardwood, and the three numbers that tell you whether a briquette is worth its price.
Coconut-shell charcoal is made by carbonising the hard inner shell of the coconut — the by-product of Indonesia's copra and coconut-oil industries. Because the shell is naturally dense and low in mineral content, the resulting charcoal burns cleaner, longer and hotter than most hardwood alternatives, without the resin or bark residues that give wood charcoal its smoke and aftertaste. That is why premium shisha lounges and export BBQ brands have shifted almost entirely to coconut over the last decade.
Three numbers decide whether a briquette is worth its price. Ash content is what stays in the bowl or firebox after the burn — under 2.5 % is what serious hookah buyers look for; under 8 % is the retail benchmark for BBQ. Fixed carbon is the share of the briquette that actually burns as heat rather than volatilising as smoke, and it is what buys you a two-hour session or an eight-hour grill. Burn time is measured on a standard head or firebox with a wind guard; real-world sessions land within about ten per cent of the lab figure.
Charcoal ships as a dangerous good — it is classified UN 1361, Class 4.2 (self-heating solid), which means every booking travels with a fresh Self-Heating Test (SHT) report and every outer carton carries UN / DG marking. Major carriers, MSC among them, now enforce that marking at the container-yard gate. A factory that cannot produce the paperwork on the day of loading is a factory whose container will not sail — which is why we produce the SHT, the COA, the MSDS and the certificate of origin in-house, per shipment, and hand the file to the buyer with the original bill of lading.
